gloknos is partnering with an international group of researchers for a 90-minute workshop on the topic of (In)visible scientific labour. The workshop will focus on the introduction to a collected volume that explores why certain people are made invisible, and how their labour and expertise are obscured.

Participants are invited to prepare discussion questions and/or comments on the draft in advance. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please contact Samantha Peel to receive the Zoom invitation and the chapter.

Numerous people, practices and professions are obscured in the course of scientific research. Translators, activists, survey respondents, nurses, missionaries, archivists, research assistants, curators, ethics review boards are part of a complex world of political and social relations that come together to make scientific knowledge. But they are rarely made visible in scientific publications, and are often hard to find in archives. The book explores why certain people and processes are made invisible, and asks how that invisibility functions. It examines how the concealment of identities and social relations powerfully shape the meaning and credibility of scientific knowledge.

Please contact organisers Jenny Bangham, Xan Chacko, and Judith Kaplan if you would like learn more about the project.
